Hotel Sizigia
CASTRO, CHILE
The Hotel Sizigia is located on the beautiful coast of Chiloé, housed in one of Chile's oldest and most traditional palafitos. The wooden architecture, built on stilts, tells the story of the island and, at the same time, opens up to the sea with its clean lines and large windows. Natural materials, tranquility, and vastness characterize the atmosphere and create a place to pause and reflect. A special hotel for anyone who wants to experience Chiloé in an authentic, peaceful way, close to nature.
Built on stilts, grounded in calm.
Highlights: waterfront I traditional architecture I thoughtful design
Set directly on the waterfront of Chiloé, Hotel Sizigia is located within one of the island’s oldest traditional palafitos - the stilted wooden houses that have long shaped both the architecture and daily life of the region. Built above the tidal zone, these structures respond to the rhythms of the sea, and at Sizigia, this relationship remains central to the experience of staying here.
The original wooden framework of the palafito has been carefully preserved and combined with a restrained, contemporary interior. Natural materials, muted colours and a deliberate simplicity define the spaces, allowing the setting to take precedence. Large windows open directly towards the water, making the changing tides, shifting light and weather an integral part of the atmosphere throughout the day. Nothing here feels overdone. The design is quiet, intentional, and rooted in the island’s character - the kind of aesthetic that doesn’t compete with the landscape, but gently frames it.
Hotel Sizigia is defined by its sense of calm. The direct connection to the sea creates a slow, almost meditative rhythm, where observing ebb and flow becomes part of daily life. There is little distraction here - instead, the focus lies on light, space and the quiet presence of the surrounding landscape. Mornings arrive with soft fog over the water, the sound of seabirds, and the subtle creak of wood as the house settles. Evenings feel intimate: a warm interior, the reflection of the sky on the bay, and the comforting sense of being sheltered while the weather changes outside.

The experience of staying here is deeply tied to the place. Chiloé is not a destination that reveals itself all at once — it unfolds slowly, through texture and atmosphere. The island is known for its strong cultural identity, wooden churches listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and a rugged coastline shaped by wind and water. Myth and tradition still feel present here, from local legends to the everyday rituals of fishermen, markets, and small towns connected by long roads and open skies. In Castro, the colourful palafitos line the shore like quiet witnesses of the island’s history — and Sizigia allows guests to live inside that story, rather than simply observing it.
While the hotel makes an ideal base for exploring, it also invites guests to stay in. There’s a rare comfort in doing very little here: watching the tide shift, reading by the window, letting the day pass without plans. The atmosphere is restful without feeling remote — close enough to the heart of Castro to step out for a walk, yet removed enough to feel completely separate.
As a small boutique hotel on Chiloé, Hotel Sizigia in Castro, Chile appeals to travellers seeking an authentic stay by the sea — where historic architecture, contemporary design and a deep sense of place come together in a quiet, unforced way.

Chile stretches further north to south than any other country in the world. Chiloé, the country’s second-largest island, lies at the northern gateway to Patagonia, where the landscape begins to turn wilder and more elemental.
The island’s capital, Castro, is known for its colourful palafitos, UNESCO-listed wooden churches, and a strong island culture shaped by ocean life, local myths, and a rugged coastal landscape. It’s a place defined by tides, weather, myths and tradition — and well worth the journey.

Fly to Puerto Montt (PMC) or Castro / Mocopulli Airport (MHC) on Chiloé (flights only operate between December and February). From there, reach Castro by car or transfer in around 25–40 minutes from MHC, or 3.5–4.5 hours from Puerto Montt (including the ferry crossing to Chiloé). I went by bus directly from Puerto Varas and it was super easy (2-3 hrs).

I had the pleasure to stay at Hotel Sizigia while solo traveling Chile`s lake region. I was totally in love with the service, the nature (wow!!) and the waterfront rooms. It was incredible to stay there and explore the city and nature all around.
