Casa Molino

PUERTO VARAS, CHILE

Set on the quiet shores of Lake Llanquihue near Puerto Varas, Casa Molino feels like a hidden retreat shaped by water, forest and Patagonian light. The small boutique hotel blends warm wooden architecture with expansive views of the lake and the snow-capped Osorno Volcano beyond. Large windows, fireplaces and natural textures create a calm atmosphere that reflects the surrounding landscape rather than competing with it. It’s the kind of place where mornings start slowly by the water - and where Patagonia quietly unfolds right outside your window.

Highlights: lake access I outstanding hospitality I volcano views

Set quietly on the shores of Lake Llanquihue near Puerto Varas, Casa Molino feels less like a hotel and more like a lakeside home where Patagonia reveals its gentler side. The wooden house sits directly by the water with its own private beach access, opening onto wide views of the lake and the perfectly conical Osorno Volcano rising in the distance. From the first moment, the atmosphere is warm and unpretentious - fireplaces, soft textures and large windows create a sense of calm that makes it easy to settle in and slow down.

Days here follow the rhythm of the landscape. The garden feels almost secret, filled with native trees, winding paths and quiet corners that lead naturally toward the lake. Early mornings bring mist drifting across the water, while afternoons invite a swim from the small private beach or simply a quiet moment listening to birds moving through the surrounding forest. It’s the kind of place where the boundary between inside and outside disappears - the lake always present, the volcano quietly watching over it all.

A house made for the horizon.

Food is one of Casa Molino’s quiet highlights. Meals are thoughtful, seasonal and deeply comforting, best enjoyed while looking out across the water as the light shifts over the volcano. The atmosphere remains relaxed and personal, shaped by a team whose hospitality feels genuinely attentive without ever becoming formal. It’s this warmth that gives Casa Molino its particular character - somewhere between boutique hotel and welcoming lakeside retreat.

Its location also makes it a perfect base for exploring the region. From here, travellers can venture into Parque Nacional Pérez Rosales, drive the scenic road up Osorno Volcano, or paddle through the dramatic landscapes of the Reloncaví Fjord by kayak. Returning to Casa Molino after a day of exploration feels effortless - the garden quiet again, the lake calm, and the sense that Patagonia is best experienced slowly.

Do not miss: the private lake access to ake a dip into Lago Llanquihue and swim with an incredible volcano view in clear waters.

  • I was lucky enough to stop at the Hotel Casa Molino in January during my solo trip through southern Chile. The old house, which has been converted into a small boutique hotel, is beautiful. The atmosphere is simple, quiet, and relaxed. Everything fits. The place is characterized by the lake (tip: be sure to go swimming if the weather permits) and the view of the surrounding volcanoes. Beautiful! I didn't have a car, which wasn't a problem. But you are more flexible with a car. I ate there every evening, which I also highly recommend. Always with a view of the volcano and outstanding service. The place is also the perfect starting point for tours into the spectacular natural surroundings (Osorno volcano, Vicente Perez Rosales National Park, Reloncavi Fjord, Puelo, Alerce Andino National Park) or for strolling through Puerto Varas and simply trying out the various ice cream parlors ;-). I hope to come back here again.
